The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on 25th May 2018 as per Regulation 2016/679 Of The European Parliament And Of The Council of 27th April 2016.
The Directive is intended to harmonize the various data protection laws across the EU through the application of a single data protection law that is binding throughout each member state.
The directive lays down rules relating to the protection of the fundamental rights and freedom of people with regards to the processing, free movement and protection of personal data. It replaces the existing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation).
Effectively this means that any organization with an establishment in the EU or offering goods or services to citizens in an EU state is required to process the Personal Data of EU residents according to this directive.
